Zvezdana Popović talk: Heroines of the Great War

Zvezdana Popović gives this free talk at North Kensington Library on 10 March about this recurring theme in Serbian centenary commemorations: Heroines of the Great War.

Every year in the small Serbian town of Kragujevac on 14 February, local people commemorate the life and death of Dr. Elizabeth Ross, Mabel Dearmer, Lorna Ferriss and Margaret Fraser. They died in Serbia in 1915 while treating wounded typhus soldiers and civilians.

Zvezdana Popovic tells how thousands of women undeterred by the government’s decision to keep them far from the front line, joined the British Red Cross, Royal Army Medical Corps, Scottish Women’s Hospitals, V.A.D.s, Mabel Stobart’s units, St. John’s Ambulance units and other organisations in their desire to help the war effort and prove their worthiness. They found themselves in the middle of the worst war tragedies they could have ever imagined and many died.

Wishing Zvezdana all the best with this talk and looking forward to doing a few talks together. Last year it didn’t happen due to commitments , fingers crossed that this year we make it happen.  All the best.
